Ranch at the Canyons
This residence is a 6,600 SF, 3 bedroom/3.5 bath, sitting on twelve acres at edge of Smith Rock State Park.
The program features an entry courtyard with a pergola, walled garden, covered back patio with a fireplace, and a lounging pool, spa, and firepit in a 3-tiered terraced patio. There are three indoor wood and gas fireplaces warming up the 5,364 square feet on the main floor and a large studio on the upper floor grounded by a stone stair tower and chimney.
The simple massing and rustic material detailing of this residence blends seamlessly with the Ranch at the Canyons Tuscan Style as well as reflecting the rural spirit of the locale. The overall design approach consists of Tuscan inspired structures: low pitch roofs made primarily of stone, connected by stucco and wood clad “additions”. There are several indoor-outdoor spaces including the sitting room/entry courtyard, Master Bedroom/Pool Patio, Bedrooms 2 & 3 with their respective patios, Kitchen & Dining/Covered Patio, and the Great Room/Rear patio.
Stone is presented structurally, as the primary material, highlighting the entry tower, stair tower, master bedroom, and fireplaces. Details include a wide-grouted random rubble stone pattern brought to course at the openings and edges to create a rustic but structured Tuscan style. Montana Moss stone was chosen to visually connect the stone to the land as it is locally sourced and blends seamlessly with the environment.
In alignment with the pastural rural character of Central Oregon five-twelve pitch roofs, sheathed with Rusted Corrugated Steel, caps the entry and stair tower to not just break up the large amount of three-twelve pitched Spanish Tile but to highlight these key spaces. Sage-Green Smooth Stucco works as a secondary material, visually connecting the two-car garage/studio massing, great room, and bedrooms to the sage meadows of eastern Oregon. Finally, Rustic 8” Vertical wood channeling wraps the RV garage and pool mechanical room highlighting the Ranch Character. Timber Wood and rusted metal are featured throughout the design to emphasize the rural character and connect the general schematic to a more detailed design.
